A volunteer work in the famous Yunnan tobacco production base — Nanmen Village and Dongnan Village, Shaxi Town, Jianchuan Country, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture was organized from May 21 to June 1, 2018. A team comprised of 7 students was led by Dr. Larry Qingning Liang, Resident Fellow from MLC. Teachers and students formed a group of 2 or 3 people to explore the fields and publicize the hazards of smoking, how to maintain personal hygiene and promote public health knowledge such as how to prevent diabetes. The team distributed hand sanitizer and soap to villagers and encouraged them to wash their hands before meals. The activities were welcomed by the local villagers. They praised the students from the University of Macau for their concern to compatriots and their sense of social responsibility.

Before heading to Jianchuan, the participants also assisted sanitation workers in the historic district of Lijiang in the early morning hours to clean the streets and pick up rubbish. Students learned the importance of environmental protection and good civic ethics through this event. The act of students influenced some of the tourists to actively join the rubbish-cleaning team.

As an important part of this service learning trip, MLC initiated the “Thanksgiving Trip” activity in the 2017/2018 academic year. Every summer, teachers and students from MLC will select an alma mater from MLC students for visitation, to go through exchange and sharing sessions with the teachers and students of the school. The purpose is to educate students to contribute to the society and express students’ gratefulness to alma mater through such activities. It also promotes the University of Macau and RC system to the local schools. This year, the delegation visited Dianchi Resort Experimental School in Kunming City, where is the alma mater of MLC resident Hou Yunhan (MLC resident). The activity was highly valued by the leaders of the school. Principals Yang Lixiong and Ni Fangyou, accompanied the delegation throughout the entire event. Our students introduced their learning experiences, what did they go through in order to enter the universities, the University of Macau, and RC system of UM through seminars and sharing sessions. The activity was highly praised by the teachers and students of the experimental school. They believed that the idea of educating students to be grateful and contribute to alma mater was very meaningful.
